About

So what is a Boat Bum?

A boat bum is a term used to denote a subculture, the characteristics of which may include aspects of, but do not necessarily extend to the beach bum, surfer, gypsy or bohemian subcultures. Jimmy Buffett is a famous archetypal boat bum.

The members of this subculture are typically water loving  people who enjoy spending time sailing, relaxing, exploring and typically live on a boat. As such, the life of a boat bum is usually one of leisure and fun punctuated by moments of sheer terror. This holds true if the particular boat bum is a coastal cruiser, blue water cruiser, an around the world cruiser, or just someone who enjoys island hopping and traveling from port to port.

Life Between the Sheets?!

On a sailboat the ropes controlling the sails are referred to as sheets.  The front sail or jib has two sheets that are led to the back of the boat along either side of the boat, so if you live, work or ride on a sailboat you have lived between the sheets!

A gypsy at heart, and working hard to realize the dream, I am looking forward to the day when I can head farther south and sail for extended periods of time. I hope to see you there!
